China will abandon its one-child policy after almost 40 years

China is abandoning its longstanding one-child policy, and will officially allow couples to have two children, Xinhua says.

The state-run news agency sent out a tweet on Thursday with the news, issued by the ruling Communist Party after its four-day meeting to chart out the country's next five years.

Details of the policy change have yet to be announced, but if the two-child provision is unconditional, this is a big move on the part of the government to loosen its decadeslong control over the population size.
