Given the popularity of the recent “Ice Road Truckers” cable show, maybe the U.S. Navy should do a series of its own on the trials and tribulations of its subs under ice. Here the Seawolf-class attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22) prepares to submerge under the ice during the recent ICEX 2011 exercises.
On a more serious note, recent reports say the U.S. Navy submarine force needs to get better acquainted with polar operations as the Arctic melts and battles begin over boundaries, transit routes and natural resources.
