Speed-limiting technology could have prevented Amtrak crash, NTSB says

Speed-limiting technology could have prevented the deadly train derailment in Philadelphia, officials said on Wednesday. But Amtrak has yet to install the system on the section of tracks where the crash occurred, even though Congress mandated it be done by the end of the year.

A train traveling from Washington, D.C., to New York City careened off the tracks in Philadelphia around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, killing at least seven people and injuring at least 140 of the 243 passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board said preliminary evidence shows the train was speeding at more than 100 mph in a 50 mph zone when the crash occurred. Read more...
